exercise of the will

“Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, there providence moves also. All sorts of things occur to help one that would otherwise never have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no one could have dreamed could ever come his way.”

Michael's Birthday Pot Luck/Art Party

Sunday, January 29, 2012

9:00 AM - 6:00 PM, all-day open house

Muir Beach Community Center: 19 Seascape Dr., Muir Beach 94965

Another year, another opus. Bring a beverage and a dish to this free communal art celebration. Parking might be a challenge, so please contact me if you'd like to car pool. You don't need to participate in the various art activites to attend and enjoy the party. Dress for the cold if you think you'd like to stroll the beach, but bring a change of clothes and your dancing shoes to take my dance class in the morning. For those who want to play with the optional art games, the itinerary for the day is as follows:

10:00 - 11:30 AM   Dance class with Michael.

A little ballet, a bit of jazz, some contemporary steps thrown in for fun. You don't have to dance the entire class. You can watch (and applaud when we're good) or just join us for the stretch portion of the class.

1:30 - 2:30 PM   Musical Chairs Still Life,

Drawing stations surround a model center piece, When the music stops you occupy the empty chair and draw/paint/charcoal/pastel right over the art work of the person who just left that station. By the end of the game each station will have a communal masterpiece or a mess! Either way it'll be a giggle. I'll provide the art materials. You provide the sense of adventure.

4:00 - 5:00 PM    Creative Writing - song lyrics.

We'll gather around the huge brick hearth and collaborate on the lyrics of a song, the "I Ain't Dead Yet" Blues. Bring your sense of humor and your best out-of-tune singing voice.

Coeur de Danseur: basic dance technique for men

Thursday, February 2, 2012

7:00 - 8:30 PM

If you ever wanted to dance but felt you could not because you were the only guy in the class, here is your chance. You do not have to be a "dancer" or a beginner either! Come explore your inner 'danseur' in a safe and open space. Using basic ballet and modern dance technique we explore the mind, body and spirit of dance for men. Between dance sequences we'll pair up on weight training exercises to prepare, strengthen and stretch the body as an instrument.

This class is a social event sponsored by the California Men's Gathering (thecmg.org). I am volunteering my expertise. The $10 fee goes to the CMG. You can pay at the door or register online at:

Inspiring Weight Loss

Most of the people I've met who have been struggling with weight loss know more about calorie reduction than any fitness trainer. Their problem is building will power and changing life long habits, not education. If this describes your challenge, please try my Never on Sunday, twelve-week program to gain awareness and then mastery of your eating behavior. It's FREE! Just go go to my blog:

Studio Upgrades

Kettle Bells for a new circuit station

Foam rollers and yoga mats enough for everyone

More elastic tubing

A portable ballet barre. Keep dancing!

Art

My most recent composition is my second play. "The Wisdom to Know the Difference" is the story of two men of different generations coping with their self-image in a romance. One of them doesn't have much time to find love. Is the glass half-empty or half-full? The extremes of these points of view are represented by unseen angels. You can read the play on the Fiction page of this site> in fact you can act it, direct it and critique it. The table-reading party is Saturday, February 18th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM, on the Auditorium stage of the Eureka Valley Recreation Center, 100 Collingwood at 18th Street, San Francisco.
